Today, Let’s Talk Sweet Pleasures at Humble Crumble

Specialising in what they call ‘Britain’s Most Nostalgic Dessert,’ could Humble Crumble capture the essence of a home-comfort, warming dessert?. As someone who appreciates the simplicity and warmth of a good hot crumble, I had to try.

I will say, I’ve now been on three separate occasions, which may be a bit of a spoiler to my verdict.

On my first visit, I sat in (FYI: very limited seating within the Spitalfields store) and I did have a small bit of drama / entertainment from [let’s say] a customer of the older generation…

As a customer, you order on the iPad at the front of the store, so the staff member on-hand can concentrate on making the orders [seems fair]. However this customer really did not want to use an iPad, no idea why, she just insisted “why can’t you just take my order”. The store member was kind enough to offer to use the iPad for her, however asked her to wait a moment while they made the couple of orders. This was met by a petulant ‘tut’, shortly before Karen flapped her arms and walked out.

So… Maybe it’s not for everyone but my verdict…

Did Humble Crumble Hit the Mark? Absolutely, Yes.

As mentioned, I’ve been back to Humble Crumble a couple more times now, I’ve had both the Mixed Berry crumble and the Apple Crumble. Both were good but the Apple & Cinnamon is worth writing about…

The first spoonful gave me a blast of what Humble Crumble is about… Warm, sweet, mouthwatering Apple filling underneath the crisp fresh shortbread Crumble. It took me on a little nostalgic journey of flavours, because it truly did taste homemade, rather than the blend of uncertainty that a store-bought Apple Crumble gives you.

Now, this is where I’ll contradict myself. Because as a choice, I opted for the blow-torched Marshmallow on top. It is far from nostalgic; but it is sweet, sickly goodness!

By the last few mouthfuls I questioned my choice… But then thinking about it, after nearly licking the bowl clean, I don’t think the variety of custard choices, nor leaving it plain would have satisfied me anywhere near as much as the marshmallow did. Also – it gives very positive Insta-vibes.

Our Verdict: Humble Crumble will give you a Dessert that warms your taste-buds

So, is it worth the hype? Absolutely, particularly if you have a sweet-tooth like me, it’s worth a visit.
The claim of being Britain’s Most Nostalgic Dessert, in theory yes. The crumble itself gives a very familiar taste (maybe because I’ve been 3-times now) but the number of different toppings gives you the choice to put a spin on the traditional classic.
